Charlie Munger's Principles of Thinking - Investing - Living

1. Invert, always invert – turn upside down to find the answer.

“If you want to be successful Don't just ask. 'What should I do well?' But also ask: ‘What will cause failure?’ and avoid it.”

This idea came from famous mathematician Carl Jacobi and became Munger's signature idea in his analysis of business and life.

2. Use Mental Models.

Munger believes that knowledge must come from many disciplines. Not just finance, he uses Mental Models from fields such as:

  • Economics: Demand/Supply, Margin of Safety

  • Psychology: Cognitive Bias, Incentive Bias

  • Biology: Survival, Natural Selection

  • Physics: Dynamic Systems, Feedback Loops

  • Mathematics: Probability, reverse thinking.

“If all you had was a hammer Everything will look like a nail.”

3. Avoiding mistakes matters more than trying to be a genius.

“It is remarkable how much long-term advantage people like us have gotten by trying to be consistently not stupid, instead of trying to be very intelligent.”

Munger isn't trying to find miracle stocks. But focus on avoiding traps such as spun stocks and stocks with no quality.

4. Long-term investment 'can wait'

“The big money is not in the buying or the selling, but in the waiting.”

He believes that real profits come from “sitting patiently” with good stocks, not trading spins.

5. Read every day – Compound Knowledge

“In my whole life, I have known no wise people who didn’t read all the time.”

Munger reads a variety of books. History, science, and business are likened to knowledge. “Compound interest” that accumulates more and more.

6. Choose business partners with morality.

He and Buffett believe that “Honesty + skill” are the foundations of a good business partnership.

“We try to only work with people we admire, trust, and enjoy.”

7. Don't do things you don't understand.

He always warns that Don't believe things you don't really understand, such as:

  • A business that sounds good but has no real income.

  • Trends without an income base (dotcom, crypto spin-off)

Powerful Quotes from Charlie Munger

“Spend each day trying to be a little wiser than you were when you woke up.”“

Try to be a little smarter each day, a little each day and you will leave others behind.”

Don't rush to get rich, but be rich in a sustainable way.
